10:45PM - 12:45PM  IMPROVING CONTACT LENS EXAM EFFICIENCY AND PATIENT SATISFACTION BY USING VHID MEASUREMENT AND APPLICATION COMBINED WITH ADDRESSING DRY EYE PRIOR TO CONTACT LENS FITTING

Increasing exam efficiency is an ongoing quest for most health care providers. If an office can increase their exam efficiency then more patients can be examined and helped in less time. This increases office productivity and patient satisfaction.  Contact lens exams, in some cases, can become marathon exams taking up more time than expected and requiring multiple follow up exams. If this process can be improved, then overall efficiency will improve as well. We will introduce Horizontal Visible Iris Diameter (HVID) testing and discussed applications of HVID testing to improve Contact Lens fits and improve efficiency by choosing the correct fitting lens the first time. We will demonstrate this technique in real time.

Contact lens wear creates a confounding problem in patients with dry eye disease and has been proven to contribute to the cause of the disease in some patients.  Dry eye disease can create contact lens discomfort, poor vision and contact lens drop out.  These issues all can affect efficiency with contact lens patients. We have to recognize this and utilize our knowledge to help try to prevent and proactively treat our contact lens patients to ensure better success with contact lens patients and better over-all health for them. We will discuss the logic of preventative care for contact lens patients and describe the latest advancements in contact lens design, fitting strategies and coatings to help us achieve the best for our patients.

Jerry Robben, OD, Chief Optometric Physician, Bowden Eye and Associates

1:30PM - 3:30PM  THE SPECIALTY LENS PRACTICE: A TEAM APPROACH

When it comes to a specialty lens practice a doctor cannot do it on his or her own.  It takes a team with coordination between doctors and staff to create an effective and efficient specialty lens practice.  This lecture will discuss ways to streamline your practice to make it a positive experience for patients.

Andrew Biondo, OD, FSLS, Kirkwood Eye Associates

3:30PM - 3:45PM  BREAK

3:45PM - 5:45PM  SPECIALTY LENSES & MATERIALS: WHERE WE'VE BEEN & WHERE WE'RE GOING

Specialty contact lens materials have evolved over time.  A better understanding of how they have changed and what they can be used for has resulted in more practitioners fitting these types of lenses.  This presentation is designed to update practitioners on the benefits of new material manufacturing advancements for GP lenses.  This is also meant to introduce practitioners to modern coatings that are used to improve wettability and comfort of lenses.
